    20 Things to Do in Austin from a Local

    As a local Austinite, or as many people say a “Unicorn” (because there are very few people in Austin these days that grew up here), I have had the opportunity to experience Austin in all different stages of life and there is a lot to do in this eclectic town, that many people may not be familiar. Whether your passion is being outdoors, music, food, or you are curious about the phrase, “Keep Austin Weird”, this list of 20 things, curated by a local, to do in 2020 will be a great guide for you to enjoy new things and further your understanding of what makes the Texas Capitol city such an incredible place to live. 

      1. Peacocks at Mayfield Park & Nature Preserve – see these majestic birds wander freely as you relax by the koi ponds and wander the 21 acres of nature trails – all of this right in the heart of Austin! 

      1. Visit the Cathedral of Junk – located in the owner’s backyard, it is the epitome of “Keep Austin Weird”

      1. Enjoy dinner or brunch at the highly touted restaurant Comedor – the bone marrow tacos are divine

      1. Tour some dive bars that are the favorites of the locals – Donn’s Depot, Deep Eddy Cabaret, Dry Creek Café (cash only!) 

      1. Listen to live music at The Scoot Inn – located on the East side of Austin, this iconic outdoor music venue and local watering hole has been around since 1871

      1. Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon – and the “you-gotta-see-it-to-believe-it” Chicken Shit bingo on Sunday from 4-8 PM 

      1. Get out of town – check out Lukenbach, TX and experience the Pickers Circle – every evening Sunday-Thursday at 5 PM

      1. Spread & Co. – This quaint neighborhood restaurant has wonderful breakfast and lunch and is known for its charcuterie 

      1. Tiny Boxwoods Milk & Cookies – a lovely breakfast spot & some of the best chocolate chip cookies around 

      1. Hike the “Hill of Life”- a very challenging part of the Barton Creek Greenbelt quintessential trail system

      1. Rent a Duffy’s pontoon boat on Lady Bird Lake and see the bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue bridge at sunset

      1. Breakfast tacos at Texas Honey Ham – in a town where there is a plethora of breakfast tacos, Texas Honey Ham has some of the best

      1. Another hidden gem in the heart of Austin - Enjoy a morning at The Flats on the Barton Creek Greenbelt

      1. Brewery tour at Jester King Brewery – local craft beers and a wonderful outdoor space to enjoy a beautiful afternoon

      1. Esther’s Follies comedy show located on famous 6th St. in downtown Austin

      1. Take a tour of The University of Texas Tower

      1. Take in the view of Austin at Mt Bonnell park, located minutes from downtown, climb the 100 steps to the top, for breathtaking views of the Colorado River (Lake Austin) as well as the Austin skyline

      1. Experience an event at The Paramount – this historic venue on Congress Avenue, just south of the Texas State Capital building, plays host to events year around
