Auditorium Shores is an Austin Park & Recreation area located on Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin, Texas. The 18-acre park is home to SXSW, Austin City Limits Music Festival, and many more special events and community gatherings.
In 2009, improving Auditorium Shores became a topic of discussion among many including The Parks and Recreation Department (PARD), C3 Presents (the organizer of the ACL Fest) and Austin Parks Foundation (APF). After several public meetings and city council meetings, the renovation of Auditorium Shores became a part of The Town Lake Metropolitan Park Master Plan process in 2012.
There was much controversy over the much smaller off-leash dog area planned for the renovations. However, after a unanimous vote from the Austin City Council, the makeover proposal for Auditorium Shores was approved.
As a result, a renovation plan was put in place and construction began in late 2013. The updates to this beloved Austin city park include a smaller off-leash area for dogs (4.7 acres instead of the entire 18 acres they were allowed to roam in before), realignment of the hike/bike trail, new irrigation and turf grass for the event lawn, expansion of the parking lot, an observation deck to the Fannie Davis gazebo, a new stretching and warm-up area, new water fountains and restrooms.
The entire project cost is estimated at $3.5 million and is funded by a donation made available by C3 Presents.
Portions of Auditorium Shores will be open to the public throughout the construction that is expected to last until the middle of 2014. In addition, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail will remain open with detours provided as construction ensues. To see the construction phasing diagram, you can go to www.austintexas.gov.
According to a recent Austin Business Journal article, Austin’s eclectic Fun, Fun, Fun Fest has already solidified a deal with the City of Austin to work around the construction and use Auditorium Shores for the November 7-9, 2014 events venue, along with nearby Butler Park.
