Austin Allergies...Oak Pollen

Austin Allergies...Oak Pollen

oak-pollenMost of the time Austin residents rant and rave about the cedar allergies so many of us contend with between December and February.  However, it’s this time of year that the oak pollen takes over the conversation!

All you have to do is look on your car every morning to see how much oak pollen is released daily by those gorgeous oak trees that loom throughout most neighborhoods of Austin.

Of course, not everyone is allergic…but a vast majority of us are.  Plus, this dusting of yellow powder on our cars almost makes it necessary to drive through the car wash every day! What a pain!

Since Austin has four allergy seasons (winter, spring, summer and fall), it’s hard to know what is causing your sneezing, wheezing and watering eyes.  During the spring, it’s definitely oak that is highest along with medium counts of molds, cottonwood, elm and sycamore – all which will last until the end of April.

So, what do we do when these symptoms arrive with a vengeance?

The best thing to do is prevention, which means to stay inside during the heaviest days and try to limit your outside activities in the morning.

Other things to try include:

·        Change clothes and take a shower after you’ve been outside.

·        Minimize outdoor activities.

·        Regularly take an antihistamine.

·        Try nasal washes to clean out any allergens that have accumulated in the nasal cavity.

·        Keep windows and doors closed.

·        Run air conditioning or heat to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

·        Talk to your doctor about prescription medications that might help.

·        Drink hot peppermint tea.

·        Invest in a humidifier.

If none of these remedies are helping, definitely visit your primary care physician to see if they have any other recommendations and also to make sure your lungs are clear and that you haven’t developed a sinus infection or an ear infection…those things can just make you more miserable!

The good thing is that this too shall pass!
