What started out as a gift to the city of Austin by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department has grown into over 40 displays, two million lights, Santa’s Workshop, Ferris Wheel, Carousel and many more holiday activities to get you into the holiday spirit!
If you’ve never seen the Trail of Lights it truly is a sight to behold and it’s no wonder that it is one of the three largest events that Austin holds each year with its twinkling lights that create memories of a lifetime!
The Austin Trail of Lights is a walking trail only and no vehicles are permitted to drive through. The trail itself is 1.25 miles, but they say to be prepared to walk about 2.5 miles by the time you include walking to and from parking areas.
This year the Austin Trail of Lights’ grand opening is December 10th and runs every night from 7-10pm until December 23rd. Admission is free until December 17th when they start charging $3 for everyone 12 and over.
Also, it is important to note that if you want to park close to the Trail of Lights a parking pass is required and can only be purchased online for $15. However, shuttles are available from the Tony Burger Center and Republic Square Park.
Some important dates to remember for the 2016 Austin Trail of Lights include:
- December 3 – Fun Run (registration is required)
- December 4-6 – STARS (these nights are closed to the public and for area non-profits)
- December 9 – Preview Party (tickets are required)
- December 10 – Grand Opening
- December 11 – UT Night
- December 13 – Heroes Night
- December 16 – Movie Night
- December 17 – Admission begins to cost $3 per person
