It is days like these that distinguish Austin as one of the most tech-savvy towns in the nation. Who knew there could be so much competition over internet speed?!?!
Not long ago, Austin was selected by Google to be the first place to install their Google Fiber which will improve internet speeds up to 100 times faster than it is today. Subsequently, AT&T has been advertising like crazy that their U-verse will provide download speeds of 1 gigabyte per second. Both of these high speed services are due to launch in Austin in the middle of 2014.
Nevertheless, it was Grande Communications of San Marcos who announced that they will be providing internet speeds of 1 gigabyte per second to some of their West Austin customers as of THIS WEEK.
According to an Austin 360 article, “The service will initially be available to about a quarter of the 75,000 homes and businesses in the Austin area that are wired for Grande’s service, including the Belmont, Rosedale, Bryker Woods, Pemberton Heights, Tarrytown, Oakmont Heights and Old Enfield neighborhoods.”
The one gigabyte per second speed means that Austinites will be able to download large files, songs, movies and TV shows in mere seconds. This boost in speed is significant considering that according to one AT&T employee, Austin residents consume data up to 20 percent higher than the average U-verse user.
Google Fiber, AT&T and Time Warner Cable will not be far behind. However, isn’t it interesting that a small Central Texas company will provide Austin with a comparable high speed service first?
