    Austin's Zilker Kite Festival

As cold as it has been the last few days, it is refreshing to anticipate this Sunday’s Zilker Kite Festival – hopefully, it will feel like spring by then here in Austin, Texas!

March 1st marks the 86th Annual Kite Festival at Zilker Park in downtown Austin.  The festival takes place from 10am-5pm and admission is free to everyone.

To participate in the kite contests, registration starts at 11am and the contest events start at 1:00pm. The Kite Festival contests include:

    1. 50 Yard Dash (Kids only)

    2. Highest Angle Kite

    3. Steadiest Kite

    4. Strongest Pulling Kite

    5. Smallest Kite

    6. Most Unusual Kite

    7. Largest Kite

    8. Oldest and Youngest Kite Fliers

According to www.abckitefestival.com, “The kite contest is open to all ages and there is no cost to compete. Competition kites must be homemade — no mass-produced, manufactured stuff. The Kite Festival wants to inspire your creativity. There are separate adult and youth categories for the contest.”

Regardless of whether you have a kite or not, the Kite Festival will entertain and amaze you!

In fact, festival goers will have the opportunity to attend a workshop between 11am-4pm where one can learn to make their own kite from scratch.  Additionally, kites will be for sale by vendors throughout the festival grounds.

The Kite Festival is organized by The Exchange Club of Austin – an organization created to prevent child abuse, the City of Austin and ABC Home and Commercial Services.  The festival was founded by The Exchange Club of Austin in 1929 with hopes to encourage creativity in children.

This year’s Kite Festival will benefit Communities in Schools of Central Texas. This organization comprises of a network of resources including community volunteers, social services and local businesses that put together programs and projects to prevent students from dropping out of school and to help them accomplish their academic goals.

The Kite Festival is a great opportunity to revel in Austin’s unique culture and play in our amazing downtown park – along with approximately 20,000 others!

Barton Springs Road will be closed from 9am-6pm on the day of the festival.  Festival goers are encouraged to park for free downtown at the state parking lot at 1604 Colorado Street or at the Toney Burger Activity Center at 3200 Jones Road.  Shuttles will be available for during the festival from these locations and will cost $5 roundtrip for anyone 12 and older.

In case of bad weather, the make-up day for the Kite Festival is March 8th.

We encourage you to discover this one-of-a-kind Austin tradition!  The sky will be a sight to behold!
