How to Help the Hungry on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is only two weeks away and many of us are preparing to take a trip to see family and friends, entertain guests in our own homes, or just indulge in our favorite holiday cuisine!!  Mmmmm….

No matter where we spend our Thanksgiving, we will enjoy great food, friends and family and probably even take a moment or two to reflect on the many blessings we have been bestowed this year!  Then, we might just jump into a family card game, watch football until our hearts are content, or take a much needed nap!  Now, you’re talking!

However, with all of our hectic schedules and great expectations, let’s not forget Austin’s less fortunate.  We may not see them in our everyday lives, but make no mistake, they live among us and their ages range from infants to the elderly.

According to official website of the City of Austin (www.austintexas.gov), there are 2300 homeless Austinites wandering the streets on any given day.

“Austin’s Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) shows evidence of over 5,800 persons accessing homeless services annually; most observers consider the HMIS total to be substantially lower than the number of people actually experiencing homelessness over the course of a year.”

With these sad statistics in mind, the Bucher Group thought you might want to know how you can give Austin’s less fortunate a better Thanksgiving this year through donations, volunteer opportunities and participation!

El Buen Samaritano Hands for Hope – In its 24th year, Hands for Hope’s goal is to feed over 1,000 families in the Austin community by bringing together traditional foods of Thanksgiving and distributing to those in need.  Volunteers are needed to sign up families, stock pantries, and assemble food baskets on November 15th.  Donations are always appreciated, as well.  Pre-registered families are allowed to pick up their meal donation on November 22nd. For more information or to sign up to volunteer for this event, please go to Hands for Hope.

Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot – Volunteer or participate in this 24th annual five mile run in downtown Austin that benefits Caritas of Austin.  This organization helps provide the community’s poor with education and support to become self-sufficient.  Perfect for the whole family, the Turkey Trot kicks off the morning of Thanksgiving and has raised over $2 million since its inception and now has over 20,000 runners, walkers and trotters.  For more information to volunteer or participate, please go to Turkey Trot.

Austin Empty Bowl Project – Sunday, November 23rd, marks the 18th annual Austin Empty Bowl Project that helps feed Austin’s hungry with gourmet soups, live music and a large selection of ceramic bowls made by local artists and potters.  To date, this yearly event has raised over $700,000 for Austin’s less fortunate.  Volunteer and donations are both needed.  For more information, please go to Austin Empty Bowl Project.

HEB Feast of Sharing – HEB celebrates the 25th Annual Feast of Sharing this year on November 25th at the Palmer Events Center and plans to feed over 14,000 of Austin’s less fortunate with a free Thanksgiving meal.  No registration necessary!  Anyone is welcome.  For more information or to volunteer, please go to Feast of Sharing.

Operation Turkey – What started out with sharing leftovers to a homeless person in downtown Austin has grown into other cities in Texas and into Colorado!  On November 20th and 23rd you can learn how you can help, on November 26th you can help cook over 350 turkeys at Bikinis Bar & Grill and on Thanksgiving morning you can help distribute the meals to the homeless in Austin.  To find out more and to sign up to volunteer, go to Operation Turkey.

Gobble Gobble Give – This program is in its 16th season and is feeding Austin’s hungry this year at Frank Restaurant on Colorado Street in downtown Austin at 10a.m. on Thanksgiving morning.  Gobble Gobble Give is different as it asks volunteers to bring a potluck dish, put together meals, clothes and care kits and then deliver the items directly to the homeless that day.  For more information or to find out how to participate, go to Gobble Gobble Give Austin.

We hope you will consider being a part of feeding our city’s homeless and hungry on the one holiday that celebrates all that we have to be thankful for!
