Pecan Street Festival Happens This Weekend

This weekend, May 2 and 3, Austin will host one of its most diverse and longest running festivals in the downtown area – the Pecan Street Festival.

Do you know why it is called the Pecan Street Festival?

Well, back when the streets of Austin were being named, the north and south streets were named for rivers (as they remain today) and the east and west streets were originally named for trees.  The east and west street names were later changed to a numeric-style naming system.

Therefore, what we now know as 6th Street used to be called Pecan Street, hence the name Pecan Street Festival!!!

This historical art festival is held twice each year – the first weekend in May and the last weekend of September – and is a two-day street festival with hundreds of vendors offering handcrafted items from arts and crafts, jewelry and clothes to anything in-between.

The Pecan Street Festival is a free, family-friendly event and includes a variety of shopping, entertainment, food and beverages, along with many activities the kids will love.

As with most any Austin celebration, live music will be playing throughout the weekend by over 50 entertainers on three stages located on Trinity, Neches and Red River streets.

Plus, one of the neatest things about this festival is that it gives back to the Austin community by donating the proceeds to many local nonprofit groups and civic originations.

We encourage you to take part in this Austin tradition in our downtown historical district!  It’s so fun that it happens twice a year instead of once!
