Top 20 Things To Do In Austin

Forbes Magazine recently named Austin the third coolest city in America – jumping from 19th place last year – with Seattle placing second and Washington D.C. taking the top spot.  But that leads to the question…what makes Austin so cool?

The cities in the survey were ranked by their attributes in arts and culture, recreation, diversity, food, proportion of population between the age of 20 and 34, and migration statistics.  Austin had its highest scores in arts and culture, but it’s lowest scores in recreation.

Attaining high marks for arts and culture is no shock.  However, not scoring as high in recreation is a little baffling. ..especially since our weather is pretty fantastic most of the year.

In light of this finding, we decided to come up with our Top 20 Things to Do in Austin.

Let’s see…Austin has:

  1. The only Formula One race track in the U.S.

  2. The largest urban bat population in North America.

  3. Three lakes that allow for water recreation including Lady Bird Lake, Lake Austin and Lake Travis.

  4. Barton Springs where people can play, swim, take a train ride, or listen to live music for free every other Wednesday in the summer season.

  5. Awesome festivals including: South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Zilker Kite Festival, Pecan Street Festival, Austin Film Festival, Austin Wine & Music Festival and Zilker Garden Festival.

  6. The Republic of Texas Motorcycle Rally.

  7. Amazing light displays with the Trail of Lights and other displays all over town around Christmastime.

  8. Headlining musicians and lively rodeo events during Rodeo Austin.

  9. Ziplining at Lake Travis.

  10. Zilker Botanical Gardens.

  11. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

  12. Auditorium Shores.

  13. McKinney Falls State Park.

  14. The Capital of Texas.

  15. Emma Long Metropolitan Park.

  16. The Paramount Theater.

  17. The Long Center.

  18. Frank Erwin Center.

  19. Baylor Street Art Wall.

  20. Sixth Street.

And we didn’t even mention the food trucks, South Congress shops, Pease Park, Eeyore’s  Birthday, U.T. Sports, Mount Bonnell, Alamo Drafthouse, the Bob Bullock History Museum or the suburban attractions.

Of course, these are things to do that most people already know about!  There’s plenty of small festivals, attractions, parks and places to see if you do a little research.

Therefore, Forbes may say Austin is cooler in the arts, culture and food departments, but please don’t count Austin out of the running for cool things to do, too!!!
