Ways to Give Back in Austin This Thanksgiving

    Written by The Bucher Group

As we move into the Thanksgiving season, many of us begin to reflect on what we are thankful for – our families, jobs, good fortunes, etc. However, to truly grasp the spirit of the holiday, we should look for ways to give back to others. Whether that be delivering meals or sending care packages to our troops, here are some of the best ways to give back in Austin this Thanksgiving:

    Deliver Thanksgiving Meals
Before you begin cooking your Thanksgiving feast, deliver holiday meals to those in need. What organizations offer this service? The following can always use a helping hand - your local branch of Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army or hospice organization.

    Participate in Austin’s Turkey Trot
Get out and burn some calories while giving back at this year's Turkey Trot – a giveback opportunity that your waistline will thank you for! Benefitting local charities, the Austin area Turkey Trot takes place Thanksgiving morning, November 23, at the Long Center. Each race starts at different times - here are the details:

    Kids K - 8:45 a.m.
    Timed 5 Mile - 9:30 a.m.
    Untimed 5 Mile - 9:35 a.m.
    1 Mile Walk/Run - 9:50 a.m.

Burning calories never felt so good!

Volunteer at a Local Soup Kitchen or Homeless Shelter

Do you love getting out and interacting with people? If this sounds like you, you are the perfect person to serve dinner at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter. But, they don’t only need people to serve…they also need volunteers to cook, collect food, set the tables, clean up afterward and more. To locate a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter, call Salvation Army, visit VolunteerMatch or check out your local Craigslist or churches.

Send Care Packages to Our Troops
Our overseas military members deserve a little something over the holidays! To thank the members of our military for their service, send them some care packages. Are you unsure what to send? Here are seven affordable ideas for military care packages. If you don’t have time to put together a care package, you can donate to Homefront America's "Giving Thanks to Heroes" program - an initiative providing Turkey Certificates to military families to go shopping for their Thanksgiving dinner. Either way, both are meaningful ways to say “thanks” for keeping us safe!

Donate to the Local Food Bank
Do you have some extra canned goods around the house? Bring them over to the local Food Bank - any bit is appreciated! The Central Texas Food Bank is always looking for volunteers and accepts just about any food donation. However, do take note of what you can donate.

    Help Your Own Family
Giving back can even be as simple as helping shop, cook and clean for your family’s annual Thanksgiving feast.

Any of these ways to give back will bring joy to your heart and the Austin community this Thanksgiving!
