Did you know that the average American consumes approximately 3,000 to 4,500 calories from eating a traditional Christmas dinner…not during the whole day, but just at the ONE dinner?!?! Wow.
Unfortunately, this extravagant number of calories does not include the additional treats we indulge in during parties, dinners or just visiting friends and family throughout the holiday season.
According to WebMD, studies show that the average American gains only 1 to 2 pounds during the holiday season. However, those pounds can add up, and contribute to overweight or obesity later in life if they are not dealt with and lost before the next holiday season.
It is no secret that most of us eat and drink more during the holidays and certainly, exercise less with our hectic schedules, numerous holiday parties and travel agendas. However, there is no need to worry about the lurking extra pounds if we plan accordingly.
First of all, excessive alcohol consumption is disastrous for weight management. Besides being loaded with calories, alcohol lowers inhibitions and increases the probability that we will over-indulge in the calorie-laden food around us.
Secondly, moderation is the best practice to keep off extra holiday weight gain. There is no reason to avoid our favorite, traditional, holiday treats as long as we remember to manage our portions appropriately.
No one wants to be on a strict diet during the holidays, but with a little planning, we can keep off the extra pounds that go along with delicious traditional foods.
A few ideas include:
- Create healthier versions of holiday favorites by cutting calories wherever possible by using chicken stock, fat-free yogurt, light cream cheese, and low-fat milk in place of high-fat ingredients. Substitute non-fat yogurt or applesauce for oil in baked goods.
- Try spiced cider as an alternative to eggnog because a cup of Celestial Seasoning’s Harvest Apple Cider has only 80 calories.
- Keep around candy canes for a fast sweet fix because three Spangler candy canes have only 67 calories and no fat.
- Dip strawberries in chocolate for a yummy dessert.
- Stock the fridge with cut veggies, fruit and low calorie dips for a healthy snack and something quick to offer visitors.
- Eat a healthy meal before going to a holiday party to stave off cravings and hunger and the potential for gorging on unhealthy foods.
- Stop at one or two alcoholic drinks during a holiday celebration to avoid excessive caloric intake. Make sure you have a designated driver if you plan to drink alcohol at all.
